I was listening to the radio today and heard a commercial that caught my ear. It was for a website that purports to give you a free laptop. Amazing, huh?
There are a few "bumper sticker thoughts" that I think are worthwhile. One of those is, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." I thought, this HAS to fit in that category. However, this ad was aired on a 50,000 watt talk station in a large metro market. Why not at least check it out? Who couldn't use an extra laptop around the house? Especially if it is free?
Rather than just go to the website (can't be too careful about drive-by downloads these days), I thought I would consult my friend Google to see what wisdom I could unearth about this site. Wouldncha know, someone else had done the research for me and proven the saying true. It sounded too good to be true, and it really was. This is the digital equivalent of the Mustang sitting in the center court of the mall with the "Win Me!" sign by it. All you have to do is fill out the handy card with your name, address, and phone number. Don't worry about all the legalese printed in 6 point font on the back of the card. All that says is that you will be inundated with junk mail and marketing calls and time share oppurtunities.
So, have you also heard this commercial on the radio and thought about getting a free laptop? Have you visited the website? If so, did you sign up? Is there anyone who actually got a free laptop? I am pretty sure there is no such thing as a free laptop.
